Biography

My current position is INF/01 associate professor (habilitated as full professor ING-INF/05) at the FIM Department of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
I got the Laurea degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy) in march 2002. In 2003 I started my Ph.D. experience at DII (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia) in the field of Information Retrieval, Multi-lingual Information Management and Similarity Search and on february 2006 I received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science Engineering with a thesis entitled “Information Retrieval Techniques for Pattern Matching”.

Research interests

My research activity has its roots in the fields of data management and, recently, is also gearing towards data analytics. As to the latter, my work concerns different analytics contexts, from medical to HRM to social network analysis, from gaming to cultural heritage, also exploiting machine learning techniques. As to data management, my research relates to the study of new methods for effectively and efficiently searching and managing data, ranging from relational to different types of non-conventional information (text, XML and graph), even in large heterogeneous and/or distributed repositories.

Selected activities

I am currently president of the degree course in computer science of the FIM Department (UniMoRe).

I have been organizer of several conferences and workshops, including GraphQ@EDBT, WETICE, SEBD, and served on the program committees of a number of conferences, such as SEKE, ICEIS, ICITCS, MOBIWIS and GKR. I have also served as editorial board member of recognized international journals, including JUCS, OJDB and EAI Transactions on Pervasive Health and Technology, and has been guest editor of special issues in JCSS (Elsevier) and Springer Nature Computer Science (Springer).

Since 2005, I am part of the International Doctoral School in ICT of his University, where he has been co-tutor of two PhD students. Since 2022, I am part of the of the PhD Program in Computer and Data Science for Technological and Social Innovation (CDS-TSI), where he is tutor of one PhD student.

I have participated in several national and European research projects on issues closely related to the representation, querying and access to data, including: 6 European projects (H2020, FP-7, FP-6 and FP-5), 1 FIRB project, 2 PRIN projects, 1 MIUR 449/97 project, 1 project for the call "Progetti di Ricerca Applicata per l’Innovazione", 1 FIT-ICT project, 1 POR-FESR project and 1 Industry 2015 project.

Some of the projects I am currently involved in:

  • Research contract between FIM Department and MIM.FSCIRE srl "Artificial intelligence-based techniques for the management of multilingual and multi-literate bibliographic assets" (PI).
  • Research contract between FIM Department and MIM.FSCIRE srl "Study and implementation of intelligent techniques for the management of multilingual and multi-literate bibliographic assets" (PI).
  • "ITSERR: Italian Strengthening of the ESFRI RI RESILIENCE" Strengthening and creation of Research Infrastructures PNRR project (WP leader, scientific director/co-director of 4 PhD doctorate positions).
